Andrew West PhD
Co-Founder
Andrew West, PhD, is a tenured professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology at Duke University with secondary appointments in neurology and neurobiology. Dr. West received his graduate and post-doctoral training at the Mayo Clinic, University of California, Los Angeles and Johns Hopkins Udall Centers of Parkinson’s Disease Research Excellence. Dr. West studies novel pathways and targets in neurodegenerative diseases with the goal of translating discoveries to successful neuroprotective treatment strategies in the clinic. Most of the West laboratory’s efforts focus on the LRRK2 protein as a therapeutic target, biomarker and a window into new mechanisms involved in neurodegeneration that causes Parkinson’s disease.
Elizabeth Viverette
Co-Founder
Elizabeth Viverette is a Ph.D. candidate in Pharmacology at Duke University, where her research centers on understanding the structural mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. With extensive expertise in protein structure and cryo-electron microscopy, Elizabeth investigates how nanoplastic exposure may promote α-synuclein aggregation and neurodegeneration in the gut and brain. Prior to Duke, she managed advanced cryo-EM instrumentation at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Her work has been featured at leading scientific meetings including the Society for Neuroscience, Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s, and the Collaborative Research Network.
Lauren Shiell
Co-Founder
Lauren Shiell is a Biomedical Engineering senior at Duke University, where her research focuses on developing environmentally relevant nanoplastics for use in animal and neurological models. As Co-Founder of NanoPoly Resources, she combines her background in neuroscience, materials science, and biostatistical applications to create high-precision micro- and nanoplastics for global research use. Her work has been presented at leading conferences, including the Society for Neuroscience.
